Is Your Career in SHAPE?

The SHAPE Career Framework

Hi, I’m Dr. Candace Steele Flippin. I am a communications executive, best-selling author, and multigenerational workplace scholar.

I’m on a mission to help women accelerate their career growth so that they can achieve the careers they need, want, and deserve.

Check out my TEDx talk where I introduce the SHAPE Career Framework that helps women advance their careers.

My research shows when considering a set of six career questions—related to job Promotion, Performance (in the current job), Balance, Money, (Changing) Careers, and Retiring—women consistently prioritize Performance, or doing well in their current role.

Regardless of their generational group, women go to work ready to do the best they possibly can at their jobs. I also found that the primary reason women leave their jobs is because they didn't have clarity on what development it would take to perform better at their roles or advance.

When asked what they wanted, the women in the study said the following:

  •  I wish I had a better financial foundation and knew how to negotiate better for what I wanted.

  • I'm giving everything I can to this job, but my boss isn't recognizing how hard I'm working.

  • I need to speak up for myself—I have something important to say.

  • I am embarrassed that I left too soon when things got frustrating and difficult to handle.

  • I am not ready to advance or to take on a new role.

The SHAPE Framework

Here’s a breakdown of my study findings into an actionable set of steps. I urge everyone to reflect on these steps, and to incorporate them into their professional lives.

Save

Create a strong financial foundation to free yourself from the fear of financial repercussions when making life and career decisions.

Hard Work

This often means delegating, working smarter, and asking for help. Mistakes are not always final. Make sure you’re on the same page as the person who is evaluating you.

Advocate

Speak up for yourself. Do not choose to silence yourself. If this feels difficult, surround yourself with people who will advocate for you when you can't do it yourself. You need to find your voice and be the best representative for what you need.

Persevere

Careers are journeys full of highs and lows. Approach difficulties with an optimistic view. Have people who can support you at the low points. Don't miss out on something great by leaving prematurely.

Educate

Commit to a strong educational foundation. This could be formal education or enhancing your skills at your current job. Essentially, it means a lifelong commitment to self-development and learning. This helps grow your confidence in your role and prepares you to take the next step when the time is right.

Remember: When it comes to your career, you need to get in SHAPE, and always choose to SHAPE it for yourself.

The perfect gift for any woman in your life… yourself included

Get Your Career in Shape and the SHAPE Workbook can help women of any generation take their careers to the next level.
